Cat flea control & Deworming

Most kittens are born with parasites and continue to be exposed to parasites as they grow. Many environmental factors can expose them to worms, such as fleas, rodents, feces from other cats, etc. Deworming does not prevent infection but instead purges the system of any worms currently infecting your cat. It is therefore important to deworm your cat regularly to ensure we are keeping your cat safe and parasite free. If you are concerned that your cat may have worms, please contact us, and we can discuss your deworming options.

How do I know if my cat has fleas?

Flea infections can often be overlooked. A flea comb is the best way to tell if your animal has fleas. It is a fine-toothed comb that collects fleas and their excrement (“flea dirt”) as it passes through the coat.

Do fleas harm cats?

Every time a flea bites, it is taking a blood meal. This means that if there are a large number of fleas on your animal, it could cause significant blood loss. Some cats also have an allergy to fleas which means they are extremely sensitive to bites. It can cause major skin problems in cats.

Why is treating and preventing fleas so important?

Once a flea infestation is established in a home, it’s extremely hard to get rid of. Flea eggs and larvae are very resilient, especially in our warm, humid climate. Regular use of flea prevention will not only prevent your cat from introducing new fleas to your home, but will also prevent the already established fleas in your home from completing their life cycle on your cat. Eventually, the fleas will die off, and your home will be flea free!

What are some simple steps for treating fleas in your senior cat?

If you’re concerned about using certain flea treatments on your senior cat, you should consult with one of our doctors to see which products are safer to use.

What are some types of parasites found in cats?

Internal parasites include roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms.

If my cat has worms, what symptoms should I look for?

Often, internal parasitic infections don’t show any clinical signs. If there are many worms present, your cat may experience segments in the stool, weight loss, diarrhea, or vomiting.

Are worms dangerous to humans?

Some types of hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms can be transmitted to humans. People with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection. It includes children, seniors, and people who are on immunosuppressive medications.

Are there any side effects from deworming medication?

Deworming medications should always be given with food as they can sometimes be hard on the stomach. You might also see segments of worms in the cat’s stool for a few days after the treatment has been given.
